Denmark's power mix is largely shaped by wind energy. In 2023, wind power accounted for over 57 percent of the electricity generation in the country. Bioenergy ranked second, with a share of 21 percent. Denmark was one of the leading producers of solar and wind power worldwide.
Denmark’s path to carbon neutrality
In 2023, around 12 percent of Denmark's electricity production was derived from fossil fuels. In line with the Paris Agreement, the Nordic country is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. In addition, it has also committed to reducing emissions by 70 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. In fact, Denmark’s power sector's carbon emissions have been on a downward trend for the past three decades, declining by around 80 percent between 1990 and 2021.
Danish offshore wind farms
The world’s first offshore wind farm was installed in Denmark in 1991. Since then, the number of active offshore wind turbines in the country has increased consistently, with more under construction. The North Sea territory around Denmark has large areas of shallow water depth, where wind reaches high speeds and low variability. These make for suitable wind resources, which place the Nordic country among those with the highest offshore wind capacity across the globe.
Distribution of electricity generation in Denmark in 2023, by source
Figures were rounded and therefore may not sum up to 100.
Solar includes both solar thermal and solar photovoltaic generation.
Bioenergy includes generation from combustible renewables and may include waste generation (renewable and non-renewable).
Other fossil includes oil and petroleum products generation, as well as manufactured gases.
